Mise-en-scene Research

The song that we are doing is Holes by Passenger and is in the genre of Folk-Rock, there are many traits of mise-en-scene that goes with this genre. Folk Rock artists include The Beatles, Rolling Stones and more recently, Mumford and Sons and these all wear similar 'folk-rock' clothes of shirts with the top button undone and usually a lot of denim. In our video we will dress our actor in jeans and a scraggy coat to help create the busker look but as our narrative is for him to have a rise to fame we will dress him in a white shirt and jeans when he reaches fame to show the rise he from 'rags to riches' he has had.

Here you can see the Folk Rock band Mumford and Sons and can see how they don't wear formal clothes during their performances but they wear smart casual clothes which is the look we'll go for when filming our performance shots when our character becomes famous. The lead singer (second from left) is wearing a white shirt which he wears when performing so we may take an inspiration from this and use a white shirt when are actor performs in front of a crowd.

We will be using a street corner in Cambridge for many of our singing songs as well as an alleyway close by to film some other shots including walking shots and the opening shot. These locations are perfect for our video as these fit in with the narrative of the video as this could be a possible place where a busker may perform and live, also there will be a lot of people walking past which will help as it will help the video to look more realistic. You can find photos of these locations in our location recce. We need a few props for our video to help set the scene and give the video a realistic feel. We are going to use a guitar in our video for the performance scenes because this what a busker would use on the streets and it will also have string missing to represent that he can not afford to replace it. We are also going to have a case for the guitar as we need this to carry it around for some shots and also to put the money on top to represent him busking on the streets and people giving him money for it.

This is a real life busker and this is similar to the look we will be going for. We will look to have a similar guitar and case as well as him wearing jeans but we will have a wooly hat instead of the trilby and also dress our actor with fingerless gloves as this is a common trend of homeless buskers.
