Location Recce

This is our location idea for our busking scenes, the location is fairly central in Cambridge but is not too busy to the extent where we would not be able to film a clear shot.

Health and safety issues may be the fact that cars sometimes go down the road, and as our filming equipment would have to be set up partially in the road for certain shot distances and angles. One factor that is helpful to us though is that cars rarely go down the street as it is one way.

This is our location idea for our first shot where the busker gets up from in between the bins at the start of our music video just before the song begins. This location will be suitable for our shots as we need a rough alleyway which is dark and deserted to film these shots as it gives the video narrative straight from the moment the video starts.

Health and safety issues could include overflowing rubbish near the bins, rats or mice down the alleyway, slippery surfaces, sharp objects, bikes and pedestrians.

Andrew Goodwin's Analysis

Andrew Goodwin created points that should be looked at when analysing a music video. These points range from genre characteristics to voyeurism so there is a lot to be analysed throughout a video but not all videos try to include these points with some directors trying to challenge these points and I will know explain each one of these. The first one of Goodwin's points is genre characteristics and this is whether a video includes common traits of the genre that the artist is included in such as Rock, Rap, and Folk Rock which is the genre of our song, Holes. The second point is the relationship between the on screen visuals and the lyrics. This where the on screen visuals link in to the lyrics of the song and this helps to create a narrative in the video which might be what we do in our video as the song we picked has lyrics that would be easy to create into a narrative in our video. Goodwin's third point is the relationship between visuals and the music which is where the on screen visuals represent what is happening in the music such as it slowing down or it speeding which would reflect in the shot at this point in the song. The fourth point by Goodwin is the need to sell the artist who is performing and this is reflected by the shots, angles and narratives in the video as this can determine the image that is shown to the audience and this is what will ultimately determine how well the artist will sell. Goodwin's fifth point is intertextuality which is when you make links to another product or text made before you have made your original product. For example if we used this in our video then we could use something similar to what someone else has already used in a music video such as  a similar performance seen to the person who originally sang the song we are using, Passenger. Goodwin's final point is voyeurism which is when a artist or band is seen in a sexual manner and is objectified in a sexual way. This point only applies to some genres of music such as rap and R&B and not to others such as Classical and Folk Rock, which is the genre our song is in so we are very unlikely to put voyeurism into our video.

Analysis of Previous Music Video

Analysis:
We have looked at a previous music video as this group had the same problem as us of the person who is the main character not being able to play the guitar and to see how they got round this problem. In their video they hide the fact that the main character can not play a guitar as they do not have any full shots of the character playing the guitar, they have quick shots of him playing either the chords or strumming and also they do not leave the camera on him playing the guitar for a prolonged period of time.

Not showing any full shots and only showing him strumming or playing chords masks the fact he can't play as it means that he only has to use one hand during the shot which means that it is more simple for the actor to play it as it only has one thing to concentrate on. Also not having prolonged shots helps to cover this up as it means he doesn't worry about performing with the guitar for too long.

Pitch Feedback

  • Need to look into using drama studio, it may not suit our needs.
  • Talk to technician about setting up lights as they could work well to conceal the fact that there is no audience and the stage is not a real performance stage.
  • We need to look at a previous performance where the main character mimics playing the guitar.
  • Decided to film busking scenes in the late afternoon/evening.
  • Be careful of the public acting silly in the background of our shots. (take each shot multiple times and from different angles).

Digipack Research and Ideas

Research:
We have looked at a number of different examples of digipack's from various artists to see what things are common and what look professional artists go for. First of, we looked at the artist who originally sung the song that we used in our video Passenger and look at the digipack that was used for his first album "All The Little Lights". The pictures below are of the front and back cover of the album "All The Little Lights" by Passenger and you can see that the trend of the front cover carries on round to the back of the digipack which gives Passenger his own identity which the public will recognise and identify as him. Also his website uses the same style of picture that the album uses which you can see below and they have purposefully done this as it helps the public to associate the image with Passenger and his album.

We will hopefully take some inspiration from this and do the same thing by having similar images on both our front cover of our digipack and our magazine advert as this will an image of our artist to be created and it also means that people will recognise these images as something associated with our artist.

Back Cover                 Front Cover

The two images you can see are the front cover of Rihanna's unapologetic album (top) and a poster showing Rihanna's Diamonds tour locations and days below it. You can see that both of these things have common themes in them such as the same image and the same font of writing on her body which helps for her star person and image to be created. The image that is used is one that is used throughout all of Rihanna's unapologetic range of merchandise including the album and posters hence why they have used this image in the poster as a lot of people will recognise this image as something to do with Rihanna and it is something personal to her image. But this image is a great example of one of Goodwin's points as it shows voyeurism as Rihanna is shown with no clothes on with only her arm and writing over her breasts. The font is also something that runs throughout Rihanna's unapologetic range which is a brilliant way to publicise her as this font is personal to her and specifically this album so whenever people see this font they know that they are reading or looking at something that is associated with Rihanna. This font runs throughout her merchandise such as t shirts, hoodies and posters so that her image is branded in various different ways giving her more publicity. The 'R' you can see in the poster is something that Rihanna has been associated with since 2009 which means that whenever anyone see this Rihanna is the first thing that comes into your head which is what they wanted from this as it is a good way to give her something small personal to her which is a good way to give her publicity.

Unfinished Homework - Henry Smith

I'm Not Afraid: Genre: Hip Hop

The colour of the costumes throughout the video are mostly dark colours like black, this somewhat emphasizes the meaning of the video, which is fear and struggle. Eminem is the only person in the video so he carries the colour of the video therefore producing the meaning. Eminem is wearing a tank top in some points of the video which is  typical clothing within Hip Hop as it represents 'the hood' and the general fashion that is seen within the rapping industry. He also wears a leather jacket which covers most of his body, this is because the video doesn't focus on exploiting the artists body. The overall colour of the video is the same as the costumes, it focuses more on the dark colours by increasing the contrast in editing. Although the video is set within a city which includes mostly dark colours.

Use of mise-en-scene in Rap, Pop and Rock music videos.

Rap: The mise-en-scene in rap videos are similar throughout most rappers. In the videos the rapper is usually shown at some point with their top off and when they are clothed they are in stereotypical rap clothes of baggy jeans, vest and snapback hat or a flat cap hat. Most videos are mainly based around the opposite gender with that usually being female and in this case then the women in the video usually dance in a very sexual and seductive manor towards the men in the video but mainly towards the main character in the video. This is shown in the video for 'In da club' by 50 Cent as he is in a club of women that are all attracted towards him and that are dancing sexually around him. Also in rap videos there is a lot of money and expensive things that get flashed about. There is always big expensive cars being driven and the actors and artist in the video are usually dressed with big diamond earing and big gold chains.

Pop: In pop music videos the mise-en-scene is similar to rap in a few ways but it is mainly very different to it. Like rap, pop videos are usually based around the opposite sex and the artist is usually shown singing a lot just like in rap. But unlike rap, pop usually has a backing band with an artist in the video, also in the pop videos the artist is dressed in typical teenage clothes whether they are male or female. A lot of pop videos are now starting to use CGI or green screens to create cartoon and fantasy effects on their artist and sometimes other main characters. For example if you look at both Call Me Maybe by Carly Rae Jepsen and Last Friday Night by Katy Perry which are both stereotypical pop songs, in both of these a fantasy effect is created and links into the song really well. Both these fantasy scenes in the videos are actually very similar with the artist shown as a princess and the main male character shown as her knight in shining armour.

Rock: Rock videos are very different to the two genres I have described so far. In these videos they are very dark and mysterious and are usually based around something supernatural, scary or the genre, rock! Nearly all rock music videos have long spells of watching the band play with them focusing on certain points of it at certain times, for example in Iron Maiden, Number of the Beast, during the guitar solo the video is focused on the guitarist playing the solo. A lot of times that the band is shown playing it is from live performances and also lights are a massive thing that you see in a rock video as these are usually from live performances. In terms of clothing most bands have their own image but generally many rock bands have studded outfits with things such as waistcoats having studs on them. They are also stereotypically where vests and sweatbands but they are usually black which shows the dark genre of the music.

Rihanna Star Persona Analysis

Rihanna Star Persona Analysis

Dress: Her dress has changed through the years has she has developed as a star, from an innocent young girl to an R&B Punk who dresses a lot more seductive and revealing. For her first two albums Rihanna wore typical pop outfits and dresses, but her third album titled ''Good Girl Gone Bad'' shows the transition between her innocent persona and her new, more rebellious and seductive, dressing more suggestively.

Product Image: Rihanna has had a different product image throughout her career changing her image most recently in 2009. She started of with her product being very pop like in her first three albums although none of these had a reoccurring theme. Whereas in 2009 with her ''Rated R'' album, Rihanna introduced her motif as the R that recurs in her other album ''Talk That Talk'', and also on most of her merchandise and her website.

Here you can see that Rihanna's website and merchandise share the same R logo.

Audience: From her first album to her most recent album her fans have either developed with her or left her, as these days her new audience is more based from R&B whereas it used to be within the pop genre. This transition is quite common for artists as when they mature so does their music, the die hard fans also will go through this transition in order to continue to follow her. This Transition probably picked up a lot of new fans.

Video Style: Through most of Rihanna's career her music videos have been focused on objectifying her but as her career has gone on her outfits and actions in these videos have become more and more sexually suggestive.

Richard Dyer's Star Theory

Richard Dyer's Star Theory

Richard Dyer's star theory is the theory that stars are constructed by institutions for financial gain and are marketed at a specific target audience. This audience can change as the star develops, and the star can remake their image.

  • A pop star's identity/persona is not restricted solely to musicianship.
  • A true pop star has a lasting significance and brand awareness amongst a wider audience over a period of time.
  • Stars represent cultural attitudes and values and will promote a certain ideology
  • Stars provide audiences with a focus for ideas of what people are supposed to be like.

Photoshop Practice - Boris Johnson and GB Flag Combination.

Photoshop Tests

Adding a Texture to an Image

We took the image of the football player and added the image of the multi coloured texture as an overlay. We then turned down the opacity on the texture so that it didn't look overpowering and you could clearly see the image of Akinfenwa.

Digital Make Up

We took the image of Bush and selected a colour for his lipstick. We then turned down the hardness and applied the colour to his lips. We then selected the rubber tool to smoothen the edges of is make up and then we selected the overlay tool to finish him off.

Photoshop test 3 - Glowing Lines

For this one I took the original image and drew some lines using the pen tool which i then turned to yellow. Then I made a new layer where I painted over the lines with the colours i wanted. Then I combined the layers and adjusted the opacity and colour, then I erased the sections i didn't want to make it look like it goes behind him.

Eric Prydz - Call On Me Music Video Analysis (Andrew Goodwin)

Andrew Goodwin's Analysis - Eric Prydz Call on Me

Genre Characteristics:
The genre of the video is Dance/Pop due the dancing people and catchy popular song. The video is set in one location and throughout they are performing a dance routine. Eric Prydz doesn't appear in the video.

Visuals and Lyrics:
In this video their are is a small part of singing, although it is an actor who is miming the lyrics not Eric Prydz himself.

Visuals and Music:
The editing speeds up and slows down in time with beat and pace of the song. There is also a lot of cutting on the beat.

Needs to Sell Artist:
The music video for Call on Me does not really sell Eric Prydz as an artist, although the overtly sexual content of the video may make certain audiences expect the same from his music videos in the future and therefore could possibly build an audience.

Intertextuality:
The music video spoofs a scene from the 1985 film ''Perfect'' which features a dance studio full of women and some men including John Travolta, dancing in a sexually suggestive manner and not wearing much clothing.

Voyeurism:
This music video definitely is full of voyeurism as the whole point of it is a room full of half-naked women dancing in a sexually suggestive manner and there is only one male but he is wearing more clothing than the women.

Music Video Analysis

Analysis.

Lalala – Naughty boy ft Sam Smith

Description: Macintosh HD:Users:student:Desktop:Screen Shot 2013-09-03 at 09.52.31.png
The genre of the music would be pop and soul, this is due to the beat throughout the song but also the contrast with the music playing over. The genre of the music video would be different due to the different camera angles which can make you think more of narrative drama. This music video reminds us of the Wizard of Oz due to the different characters that are portrayed. In the image above you can see them walking down a dusty train track which looks like an abandoned train station as if their on a questDescription: Macintosh HD:Users:student:Desktop:Screen Shot 2013-09-03 at 09.47.45.png
From the beginning scene of the music video you can see that the little boy is from an abusive family background, as the song continues you see the him run away and seek for help.As video carrys on the repetition of ‘Lalala’ gets stuck in your head. Our interpretation would be the young boy trying to block out all the bad things that have happened to him in the past and run away from them.

Olly Murs – Troublemaker.

The woman is making a fool of herself whilst trying to impress Olly, in this wide-angle shot she is surprised to see him and gets kicked out of the shop for breaking the mannequins. This shows us as a viewer that when you like someone you seem to muck up a lot and become very clumsy.

I need your love – Ellie Goulding and Calvin Harris.

The genre of the music video would be based on two people who like each other, in our opinion it is a couple who recently got together so they’re all loved up and acting as if nothing is wrong. In the music video you realise that they are hand holding a camera them selves. The different angles can portray to us that they both are at the same level of importance as each other. Description: Macintosh HD:Users:student:Desktop:Screen Shot 2013-09-09 at 12.44.11.png

Katy Perry – Last Friday night.

This music video is mainly about teenagers and growing up, the genre of the music video would be teenagers. The different camera shots for example when shot reverse shot is used in the part when transforming her from a stereotypical geek to a ‘popular’. The shot below shows how stereotypical people can be mainly based on the class and status of a person. For instance in the images below it shows how the ‘popular’ boy of the party is judging her all because of how she looks then when she’s transformed you see how different he acts with her all because its based on looks and how he suddenly becomes drawn to her.

Description: Macintosh HD:Users:student:Desktop:Screen Shot 2013-09-09 at 13.05.57.pngDescription: Macintosh HD:Users:student:Desktop:Screen Shot 2013-09-09 at 13.06.45.png
Shaggy – Wasn’t me.
Description: Macintosh HD:Users:student:Desktop:Screen Shot 2013-09-09 at 13.16.58.png
Description: Macintosh HD:Users:student:Desktop:Screen Shot 2013-09-09 at 13.17.07.png
In the image above you see the picture of the man’s partner; which is then shortly followed by a pan of the camera upwards to see his ‘bit on the side’.  This music video would be known as cheating and thinking he can get away with it, the lighting on both parts of this scene in the video is quite dark and gloomy which can be referred back to someone doing a bad deed and ending up getting caught for it.

Katy Perry – Roar.

Description: Macintosh HD:Users:student:Desktop:Screen Shot 2013-09-09 at 13.36.14.png
This clip show us that she’s stereotypically girlie to be where she is. This is mainly shown on the part when you see her reaction shot of the spider on her, this part you can see every girls stereotypical ‘fear’ over spiders.

Description: Macintosh HD:Users:student:Desktop:Screen Shot 2013-09-09 at 13.38.51.pngDescription: Macintosh HD:Users:student:Desktop:Screen Shot 2013-09-09 at 13.39.07.png
