Use of mise-en-scene in Rap, Pop and Rock music videos.

Rap: The mise-en-scene in rap videos are similar throughout most rappers. In the videos the rapper is usually shown at some point with their top off and when they are clothed they are in stereotypical rap clothes of baggy jeans, vest and snapback hat or a flat cap hat. Most videos are mainly based around the opposite gender with that usually being female and in this case then the women in the video usually dance in a very sexual and seductive manor towards the men in the video but mainly towards the main character in the video. This is shown in the video for 'In da club' by 50 Cent as he is in a club of women that are all attracted towards him and that are dancing sexually around him. Also in rap videos there is a lot of money and expensive things that get flashed about. There is always big expensive cars being driven and the actors and artist in the video are usually dressed with big diamond earing and big gold chains.

Pop: In pop music videos the mise-en-scene is similar to rap in a few ways but it is mainly very different to it. Like rap, pop videos are usually based around the opposite sex and the artist is usually shown singing a lot just like in rap. But unlike rap, pop usually has a backing band with an artist in the video, also in the pop videos the artist is dressed in typical teenage clothes whether they are male or female. A lot of pop videos are now starting to use CGI or green screens to create cartoon and fantasy effects on their artist and sometimes other main characters. For example if you look at both Call Me Maybe by Carly Rae Jepsen and Last Friday Night by Katy Perry which are both stereotypical pop songs, in both of these a fantasy effect is created and links into the song really well. Both these fantasy scenes in the videos are actually very similar with the artist shown as a princess and the main male character shown as her knight in shining armour.

Rock: Rock videos are very different to the two genres I have described so far. In these videos they are very dark and mysterious and are usually based around something supernatural, scary or the genre, rock! Nearly all rock music videos have long spells of watching the band play with them focusing on certain points of it at certain times, for example in Iron Maiden, Number of the Beast, during the guitar solo the video is focused on the guitarist playing the solo. A lot of times that the band is shown playing it is from live performances and also lights are a massive thing that you see in a rock video as these are usually from live performances. In terms of clothing most bands have their own image but generally many rock bands have studded outfits with things such as waistcoats having studs on them. They are also stereotypically where vests and sweatbands but they are usually black which shows the dark genre of the music.
